LOL-LAB: EXPERIMENTS IN FUNNY

LOL labs_Plasma screen_2019_TP.jpg

LOL- Lab is on the lookout for Imperial College researchers who fancy trying their hand at stand-up comedy. By delivering stand-up about specific research, academics develop skills in making work accessible for a wide range of audiences and really consider the perspective of the general public. As academics work with local residents to practice their set, they receive feedback, a really in-depth understanding of what needs clarity and explaining, and what the public might understand already.

Working with a professional comic in the training sessions participants cover tone, pitch, voice and body language, as well, of course how to make things funny. This can help talks, lectures, media appearances and other forms of Public Engagement.

With half the attendees from the local community, there is an opportunity to develop material in a much more diverse group than might be otherwise.

Staff who have been part of the programme have said this has really helped them to feel more confident about sharing their research with the public.

“That it's not as scary as it seems to stand up and make fun of my research!”
